RJ11 is the standard telephone port for POTS? system. In Allegheny County, Verizon owns the POTS network. They do not wish to keep this network running, but I am guessing there is something legal requiring them to support their current customers. However, moving customers, and new customers will not be supported. If there was to be insistence on Verizon being your telephone provider, then there would have been a need for RJ11, and running those lines to a coaxial connection for FiOS? Telephone services. This is too restrictive, and goes against everything I would want from the home.
With that said, I am using SIP? for my telephone services. The phone would be a wifi? phone which will have the connection features built into the phone. This means the only other thing it needs is a charging dock. The Grandstream WP825 also support cord charging using a micro USB-B port. With the carrier I chosen, things just works, and works well enough for all of my home communication needs – and all without using the POTS telephone network.
Since Verizon is shutting down its POTS network, and I am relying on SIP, there simply is no valid reason to have an RJ11 jack anywhere in the property. To keep things simple, I would just not install it, and rely on the ethernet (RJ45) if I should need to connect telephones to the SIP or VOIP? networks.
